Be realistic.

Sure, your kids would like to be in basketball, baseball, chorus, band, and football, but if you’re a working parent with limited time, you’ll need to figure out what’s realistically feasible. As hard as it might be, you may want to ask your kids to narrow down their extracurriculars to a few choice ones. That way, you won’t spend all of your days playing chauffeur and tossing a burger into the backseat so that you can make all of the practices on time, or worse, missing your deadlines.

Schedule and write down everything.

Dentist appointments. PTA meetings. Work deadlines. It’s almost impossible to remember all of the appointments and deadlines that you have—and that’s where a calendar comes in. You might opt to use a shared family calendar that encompasses all of your family’s activities…and some of your professional ones, so that everyone knows what you’ve got going on.

Figure out what type of calendar works best for you, whether it’s using your phone, a program like Google Calendar, or a whiteboard that is accessible to all in the main hub of your home. Then look at the calendar, starting from a general monthly glance, to an inspection of what the week is looking like, to what you’re going to need for tomorrow. That way you won’t be overwhelmed.

Own your schedule.

If you have a flexible job that allows you to customize your calendar, then it can be a lot easier to fit all of the family and work pieces together to make sure that you can get everything done. That said, even if you work from home but have set work hours, understand when you’ll be busy (and when you’ll be free) and then schedule accordingly. Know when you might need to take some time off to make your child’s art exhibition at school. And if you have a traditional job that isn’t giving you or your family the work-life balance that you all deserve, it might be time to look for a telecommuting or flexible job.

Fit in some free time.

Yes, it’s great when you’re able to accomplish everything on your to-do list, but if you aren’t taking some time for yourself, you’ll burn out before the first month of school is over. Fit in some fitness, time for friends, and time for your partner, too. Being able to zen out and just be can do wonders for your work-life balance, your creativity, and your overall well-being

Try establishing a routine.

When you’re pulled in every direction but the one you’re supposed to go in, everything will suffer—including your sanity. Even though school might not have started yet, look at your work and family commitments and try to marry the two on your calendar. Look at what’s feasible and what isn’t, and then stick to that routine. Having a dependable schedule can help kids do well in school and help you do well at your job.
